A small Mexican Navy plane carrying a young patient and seven others crashed Monday near Galveston, killing at least five people and launching a search in waters off the Texas coast, officials said.

Mexican plane crash

Four of the ship’s passengers were naval officers, and four were civilians, including a child, the Mexican Navy said in a statement to the Associated Press. It was not immediately clear who the deaths were confirmed by Officer Luke Baker of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Reports indicated that two of the people on board the plane were members of the Micho and Mao Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to Mexican children with severe burns.

The accident occurred Monday afternoon near the base of a causeway, an elevated road usually built over water, near Galveston, along the Texas coast about 80.5 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Houston.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The Texas Department of Public Safety revealed on the social media platform X that teams from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board had arrived at the accident site.

Galveston County Police said dive teams, a crime scene unit, a drone unit and police patrols were responding to the crash, and said in a Facebook post that the public should avoid the area to ensure the safety of rescue teams.

According to the Associated Press, it is not yet clear whether weather is a factor, as the area has seen heavy fog over the past few days, according to Cameron Batiste, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
