She announced Academy of Scientific Research Egypt has officially joined as a full partner in the European Health Partnership (ERA4Health), becoming the first African and Arab country to participate as a founding and full member of this huge alliance, which includes 37 funding and research bodies from 24 member countries.

Academy of Scientific Research: Egypt is the first African and Arab country to officially join as a founding member of the European Health Partnership

In this context, Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said that the results of Egypt’s official accession as a founding partner in the European Health Partnership ERA4Health reflect the distinguished position of Egyptian education and scientific research at the international level, and highlight the success of the Ministry’s strategy in supporting scientific research and enhancing international cooperation, with an emphasis on enabling Egyptian researchers to access global research platforms and providing opportunities that contribute to developing medical innovation and improving the quality of life of citizens.

Dr. Gina El-Feki, Acting President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, confirmed that Egypt’s accession as a full partner in the European Health Partnership ERA4Health represents an important step towards integrating the Egyptian research community into the largest international alliances for medical sciences, which allows Egyptian researchers to access global resources and expertise and enhances their ability to carry out high-impact research and develop innovative solutions to health challenges, which contributes to supporting the knowledge economy and improving health care in Egypt.

The ERA4Health partnership aims to enhance joint coordination between national research funding programs in member states to finance high-impact research in the fields of health. Its importance lies in providing a strong platform for international cooperation that allows Egyptian researchers to access global resources and expertise and accelerate the pace of innovation in the face of pressing health challenges. This partnership comes with support from the “Horizon Europe” program for research and innovation, with a focus on axes such as cardiovascular diseases, nanomedicine, the development of precision diagnostic tools and therapeutic nutrition.

In addition to its primary role in coordinating and financing joint research projects, the partnership aims to carry out a number of important activities to enhance the health research environment and its efficiency, including supporting researchers, especially in less-represented countries, by providing training and guidance on how to plan and manage complex international clinical trials, including dealing with various regulatory and ethical requirements, organizing workshops and seminars to train researchers to write competitive research proposals, understanding European funding mechanisms and applying the principles of “responsible research and innovation” in their projects, and encouraging the adoption of best practices, management and quality of data in a way that raises the value and credibility of the results. Research, and creating platforms for communication between researchers from different specialties and decision makers to facilitate the exchange of experiences and accelerate the transfer of research results into practical applications in health care systems.

In the context of activating this partnership, applications will be opened for the first joint research call available to Egyptian researchers under the umbrella of the European Health Partnership by mid-November 2026. This call focuses on supporting multidisciplinary and applied research in the field of combating obesity and overweight, by studying the biological, genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying obesity, and developing innovative public health strategies to prevent obesity during “critical transitional periods” in human life, while evaluating the economic impact of these strategies on health care systems.

In a related context, expanding the network of international partnerships, Egypt recently joined as a full member of the Global Alliance for Infectious Disease Preparedness Research (GLOPID-R), which is the most important platform in the world that brings together major funders and key players in epidemic preparedness research, including European countries, the United States, Canada, India, Japan, and the United Kingdom, which enhances Egypt’s ability to coordinate and respond quickly to emergency health crises.

It is worth noting that Egypt is in the process of completing the procedures to formalize its participation in the European Partnership for Personalized Medicine (EP PerMed), following Egypt’s announcement as a full member of the International Alliance for Personalized Medicine (ICPerMed), which represents an important step towards strengthening health research based on designing treatment according to the genetic makeup of the patient.

These accelerated steps represent the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology’s commitment to integrating the Egyptian research community into major international alliances, and providing competitive financing opportunities that contribute to building the knowledge economy and improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen.
