United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed on Monday that he is deeply concerned about the possibility of escalating instability in… Venezuelaits potential impact on the region, and the precedent it may set for how relations between countries are managed.

Guterres is worried

He added in a speech read by diplomat Rosemary DiCarlo during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council: “These recent developments come in the wake of a period of escalating tensions, which began in mid-August.”

He continued, “As discussed in this Council on two previous occasions, I have repeatedly stressed the need for full respect by all for international law, including the United Nations Charter, which constitutes the basis for the maintenance of international peace and security.”

Guterres concluded his speech by saying, “I remain deeply concerned about the lack of respect for the rules of international law.”

American forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife last Saturday, during an operation that claimed the lives of dozens of people, including civilians, as a result of the explosions that struck the capital, Caracas, along with a number of other regions.

Maduro and his wife were taken to New York, and on Monday he went to court to be tried on drug smuggling charges.
