Sleep specialists have warned of the danger of relying on making up for lost hours of sleep during the weekend, stressing that few… sleep Accumulated throughout the working days negatively affects health, even if the person feels temporary relief after sleeping for longer periods on vacation, according to what was published in Marca.

Compensating for lack of sleep on the weekend does not protect your health

Experts explained that many workers do not get enough sleep in terms of quantity or quality during weekdays, which leads them to mistakenly believe that this deficiency can be compensated for in a day or two, which does not give the body a real opportunity to recover.

The report indicated that the short-term effects of lack of sleep appear in poor concentration, attention, and memory, decreased productivity and creativity, in addition to mood swings, increased nervousness, anxiety, and tension. Some people also suffer from constant fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and a weak immune system.

In the long term, chronic lack of sleep may lead to more serious health risks, including an increased risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and kidney problems.

It is also associated with psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety, and hormonal changes such as high levels of the hormone cortisol, in addition to an increased risk of some neurological diseases and cancers.

Sleep specialists confirmed that the main reason for the ineffectiveness of compensatory sleep on the weekend is due to the disruption of the body’s biological clock, as the brain cannot restore lost sleep efficiently within a short period, which leads to a defect in the physical and mental restoration processes that occur during deep sleep.

Experts stressed that the best solution for maintaining health and feeling comfortable is to get regular, good-quality sleep every day throughout the week, and not to rely on intermittent or compensatory sleep on weekends only.
