The legal representative of the Cairo 24 Foundation submitted a memorandum to Counselor Mohamed Shawky, the Attorney General, requesting that he take what he deems appropriate andRelease Our colleague Fares Fouad, a journalist on the site, was arrested against the backdrop of a decision issued by the Agouza Prosecution to detain him for 4 days pending investigation.
“Cairo 24” submits a petition to the Public Prosecutor after the imprisonment of journalist Fares Fouad
The legal representative explained, in his memorandum, that he was surprised by the issuance of the imprisonment decision in an incident related to the colleague’s practice of his journalistic work through news published on the Cairo 24 website, issued with an official license from the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.
He pointed out that the imprisonment decision explicitly contradicts Article 29 of Law No. 180 of 2018 regulating the press and media, which stipulates that: “No custodial penalty may be imposed for crimes committed by publication or publicity,” with the exception of crimes related to incitement to violence, discrimination between citizens, or defamation of honor, which is also consistent with the text of Article 71 of the Egyptian Constitution.
Cairo 24 Foundation confirmed that colleague Fares Fouad works as a trainee on the website, which was proven through official correspondence issued by the website and submitted to the Public Prosecution, as well as an official letter issued by the President of the Journalists Syndicate and addressed to the Agouza Prosecution, confirming his journalistic status.
The Foundation stressed its full confidence in the integrity and justice of the Public Prosecution, demanding the correct application of the law and the Constitution, and the release of the colleague, out of respect for freedom of the press and to guarantee the rights of journalists to practice their professional work in accordance with legal frameworks.
