Britain’s gas reserves have reportedly reached a level sufficient for only two days, after reserves declined and liquefied natural gas tankers were diverted from Europe to Asia due to the war with Iran.
Gas in Britain
The Guardian revealed in a report that the stock reached 6,999 gigawatt hours on Saturday, compared to 9,105 gigawatt hours last year, while the maximum storage capacity is 12 days.
National Gas indicated that storage levels are generally consistent with what is expected at this time of the year, stressing that the United Kingdom relies on a variety of gas sources, including local production from the British continental shelf and Norway, in addition to liquefied natural gas and interconnection lines with Europe and storage, to ensure a balance of supply and demand.
Despite the decline in stocks, the British Ministry of Energy Security confirmed that the energy mix is diverse and safe, and that the system is capable of facing any disturbances, while gas prices rose sharply after air strikes on Iran and the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which affected global supplies.
Ship tracking data showed that at least two tankers had changed their course from Europe to Asia since Friday, while UK gas futures saw a rise to 137 pence per unit thermal compared to 78.5 pence before the outbreak of war with Iran.
