Archaeological expert: Restoring the tombs of the immortals will save the nation’s memory
Tamer Al-Minshawy said in exclusive statements to Cairo 24 that the restoration work witnessed by the Immortal Tombs represents an important model for preserving heritage, stressing that what happened was not just maintenance work, but rather saving the memory of a nation and protecting important pages from the history of Islamic Egypt, which includes symbols and personalities that left a prominent impact on the national conscience.
He explained that the restoration efforts carried out by a specialized team in cooperation with a private company, led by engineer Ahmed Fathi, contributed to the revival of a number of archaeological evidences of architectural and spiritual value, noting that preserving these evidences reflects society’s respect for its historical roots and restores respect to the aesthetics of funerary architecture that has distinguished Cairo throughout the ages.
He pointed out that among the most prominent pieces of evidence that received special attention during the restoration work were the compositions of Ismail Selim Pasha, Gulzar Hanem, and Aisha Siddiqa, in addition to the great poet Ahmed Shawqi, stressing that preserving these pieces of evidence represents a preservation of the cultural, literary, and social memory of Egypt.
For her part, Salma Ahmed, who is interested in Egyptian heritage, expressed her appreciation for the efforts made, stressing that cooperation between researchers and executive authorities represents a successful model in protecting national heritage, and contributes to enhancing community awareness of the importance of preserving historical sites.
