The repercussions of the Barcelona and Atletico Madrid match are still continuing in Spain, after the refereeing controversy that accompanied the match, especially regarding the controversial shot in the 54th minute, of the two teams’ confrontation in the quarter-finals of the Champions League 2025-26 season, which ended with Atleti winning 2-0 in the first leg.
An arbitration controversy follows the match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid due to a dramatic penalty kick
The match witnessed a refereeing situation that raised widespread objections, when Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Juan Musso passed the ball with his foot to his teammate Mark Poppel, who handled it with his hand inside the penalty area, believing that play had not yet resumed, in an incident in which referee Istvan Kovacs did not award a penalty kick, and video referee Christian Dengert did not intervene to change the decision.
The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo confirmed that the situation required a penalty kick, without announcing a yellow card, indicating that the decision may fall within the discretionary cases that the referee leaves for his evaluation, which explains the lack of video technology intervention.

She continued: This opinion is based on similar arbitration precedents, most notably what happened in the Club Brugge and Aston Villa match in the Champions League, when a penalty kick was awarded in a similar incident after referring to video technology, after defender Tyrone Mings touched the ball with his hand inside the area.
The match also witnessed another controversy, after the referee merely warned Pau Coparsi for his intervention on Giuliano Simeone, before the video referee intervened and demanded his expulsion.
She concluded that football circles are awaiting the extent of the impact of these decisions on the future of the Romanian referee in European championships, especially with the approaching decisive rounds, in light of his possible nomination to manage major matches by UEFA and FIFA.
