A train driver was killed and others were injured after a train derailed near the Spanish city of Barcelona, according to local media.

Train derailment in Barcelona

The Spanish authorities reported that a train driver was killed and at least 37 people were injured, including four in serious condition, after a passenger train derailed and collided near Barcelona.

According to local officials, the “Rodales” train collided with a retaining wall that collapsed on the railway between Gelida and Sant Sadurni on Tuesday evening.

Catalonia’s regional fire inspector, Claude Gallardo, said that all passengers had been evacuated from the train.

The accident occurred amid severe storms sweeping northeastern Spain, as the coastal areas in eastern and northwestern Spain declared a state of maximum alert due to the weather conditions.

Spanish emergency services reported that 11 ambulances were at the scene of the accident in Gelida, Catalonia, about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) west of Barcelona, to provide treatment to the injured.

The Fire Department announced that 35 fire brigades were sent to the area and rescued a passenger who was trapped inside the train.

In a later update, the company reported that no one remained inside the train, and that its teams were conducting a sweep of the area to rule out the presence of other victims.

Emergency services reported that they had evacuated some of the injured to nearby hospitals in Moises Brugge, Bellvitge and Villa Franca.

Another train on Barcelona’s train network also derailed on Tuesday.

“A rock uprooted by the storm collided with the axle of the train,” Adiv, the Spanish railway network operator, said in a statement.

The train was running between Blanes and Massanet-Masanes, northeast of Barcelona.

No injuries were reported, and service was suspended.

These accidents in Catalonia come two days after two high-speed trains collided in Adamuz, Andalusia, in one of the worst Spanish railway accidents in more than a decade.

At least 42 people are known to have died after the cars of a Madrid-bound train derailed, crossed onto the opposite tracks and then collided with an oncoming high-speed train.
