Samsung is reportedly unsure whether investing in another thin flagship phone to succeed the Galaxy S25 Edge is worth it. The existence of a successor to the Galaxy Z Tri Fold is still uncertain.
Samsung released the Galaxy S25 Edge in May last year, and the Galaxy Z Tri Fold was released in December. Both phones introduced new concepts, with the former being an ultra-thin flagship phone while the latter pushed the boundaries of foldable phones. However, they may remain as one-off releases as Samsung is unsure if they will get successors.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Samsung’s Chief Operating Officer, Won Jun Choi, spoke about the future of these two phones, and stated that there are no commitments to release their successors. It’s unfortunate news for those who were hoping for more accurate versions of these phones. The reason for this decision, according to Choi, was the disappointing sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge, especially compared to its more traditional companions.
“People have different tastes, requirements, and different criteria in choosing their devices. We haven’t made a decision on when the next release will be, but it’s still under consideration,” Choi said. There were reports of Samsung canceling its “Edge” lineup, but they were followed by reports of the form factor returning under a different name. At this point, it’s uncertain whether Samsung will invest in another ultra-thin flagship, but the chances of that happening seem slimmer now.
As for the Galaxy Z Tri Fold II phone, Choi explained that the development of the “Tri Fold” began as an engineering achievement and research and development. Because of the phone’s complexity and high price, although it is sold out everywhere, its market appeal is limited. “In the beginning, it was like creating a new category and putting all our expertise into it. Now we’re wondering, should we develop a new phone? We haven’t made a decision yet,” Choi added.
Meanwhile, he pointed to the Galaxy “Wide” Fold, not exactly by name, but as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold series that could meet the entertainment needs of those who want to watch Netflix or YouTube on a larger screen. The Bloomberg report reiterates that the Wide Fold phone will arrive this summer, but a specific release date has not been shared yet.
