Nintendo has sparked confusion after recently reducing the prices of digital games on Switch 2. These games were priced lower than their physical copies, leading critics to worry that the prices of physical copies might rise.
However, a former Nintendo sales team member believes that this scenario is unlikely, but the company may seek to mitigate the impact of a possible increase in the price of the device itself.
The former employee, named Sean, shared his opinions on the Kit & Krysta podcast, where his former position put him in a position to discuss the company’s plans to segment its games.
Shawn explained that the launch of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book comes with a difference in pricing; The eShop version will be sold for $59.99, while the physical version will be sold for $69.99.
However, it’s not yet clear if some games could reach $80 like Mario Kart World, but he expected physical game prices to remain at their current levels.
Sean pointed out that Nintendo can benefit from digital sales because they are cheaper to produce than physical copies, and are not affected by shipping problems or high fuel costs, and NAND Flash production problems may threaten the availability of physical copies.
An increase in the price of the Switch 2 may become inevitable due to the global shortage of memory, as happened with the Xbox and PS5 devices. If this happens, Nintendo will justify the higher price with the overall value the device offers, while cheaper digital games will help encourage owners of the original to upgrade.
Sean also expects new bundles that include exclusive games to appear, and some configurations could reach more than $500, including a longer Nintendo Switch Online subscription or add-on accessory. Shawn advised players to get a Switch 2 at its current price before any possible increase.
