Samsung announced a new patent and technology. The same technology can be used for TVs, monitors, laptops, etc.
Samsung uses an OLED screen, which features low power consumption, high brightness, and fast response time. This screen, specifically, is equipped with a transparent luminous display panel, through which light can shine.
So, content can be displayed on it, yet light can pass through it. This screen can be flat and flexible, while a rotatable screen can also be created from it, apparently.
A while ago LG patented something similar, and Xiaomi managed to release a transparent TV recently. So, this technology already exists, and we can see it moving to smartphones soon.
Are transparent smartphones the future?
If we believe what science fiction movies tell us, the answer is yes, but we will see the answer with time. There are some drawbacks in such designs.
What drawbacks might these designs have?
The first thing that comes to mind is the cameras, you need to have the front and rear cameras running somewhere. If you put it in the usual place, and if the phone is transparent, you will see these camera sensors, so it won’t be completely transparent, which defeats the purpose.
To solve this problem,
- OEMs can increase the thickness of the bezels, including a thicker top or bottom bezel as this will create a transparent smartphone that is not completely bezel-less, which also doesn’t make sense.
- Another drawback may be related to the viewing experience. Transparent screens may look great, but they can obstruct what you see on the screen. Content can be invisible or too bright without proper lighting.
- Lack of privacy, as anyone on the other side can see the contents of your screen.
- Not being able to put a cover on the device to protect it from scratches, and thus it will be vulnerable to scratching and breaking at any moment, especially since the largest part of it is a screen without a solid body to protect it.
These are just some of the potential problems when it comes to such displays. The question is, are these smartphones worth developing? Foldable or rotatable phones make more sense than transparent ones, but we’ll see…
What do you think?
