Samsung Display has announced plans to launch new advanced OLED displays this year. The new displays, which fall under the new “QD-OLED Penta Tandem” brand, will join recent 27-inch and 32-inch models that already benefit from five-stack and EL 3.0 technologies.
Samsung Display has now formalized the branding of its “Electroluminescent Layer Gen 3.0 or EL 3.0” technologies and the five-layer OLED structure that underpins modern QD-OLED display versions. For reference, these displays were colloquially referred to as “Gen 4 QD-OLED” displays. Although not an official brand, Samsung Display and its partners continue to market displays like the ROG Strix OLED XG32UQDMS as taking advantage of “Gen 3” QD-OLED technology.
Meanwhile, LG Display has adopted the “Tandem OLED” branding for its latest WOLED panels. In response, Samsung Display announced the “QD-OLED Penta Tandem,” where “Penta” refers to the three blue and two green emission layers found in recent gaming monitor versions like the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM3 and MSI MPG 272URX (currently $899 on Amazon). The full list of current displays supported by QD-OLED Penta Tandem is as follows:
Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM
Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM3
Asus ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDN
MSI MPG 272URX
MSI MPG 341CQR X36
Meanwhile, Samsung Display has confirmed that a new segment of QD-OLED Penta Tandem displays is coming later this year as well. Specifically, the company explained that a 49-inch variant is on the horizon. At this point, it remains to be seen which monitor manufacturers will adopt this 49-inch panel. So far, Samsung Display has confirmed that this larger QD-OLED Penta Tandem panel will output a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels, also known as Dual QHD or DQHD. Samsung Display will likely complement this resolution with a 240Hz or 360Hz refresh rate.
