The tragedy occurred last Friday, when the inner wall of the ancient monastery collapsed, in the presence of a number of children, resulting in a state of shock among the people of the area, and a quick intervention by the concerned authorities to control the situation and provide the necessary aid to the wounded, in addition to removing the effects of the collapse and determining the causes of the accident.

Action by the Ministry of Social Solidarity

Following the incident, Dr. Maya Morsi, Minister of Social Solidarity and President of the National Council for Women, directed the Head of the Central Administration for Social Protection, in coordination with the Director of the Social Solidarity Directorate in Minya Governorate, to provide all necessary forms of support and assistance to the families of the victims. This includes financial support, urgent aid, and psychological and social care for the families of children who lost their lives, in addition to providing medical care for the injured who are receiving treatment in local hospitals.

The Minister stressed that the Ministry will spare no effort in providing all means of support and support, noting the importance of the field presence of social teams to follow up on cases and provide the necessary assistance. Morsi added that the Ministry receives direct instructions to follow up on developments in the condition of the injured and ensure that they receive the necessary treatment with the highest levels of medical care.

Official condolences and reactions

The Minister offered her sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Mark, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. The Ministry also expressed its full solidarity with the members of the Christian community and the people in the center of Mallawi, stressing that the incident of the collapse of the wall caused deep sadness among the citizens, and requires all governmental and social support to mitigate the consequences of the tragedy.

Follow up on the incident and take preventive measures

The officials indicated that the concerned authorities are currently opening an urgent investigation to determine the causes of the collapse and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in ancient or archaeological buildings. Efforts have also been intensified to secure all archaeological sites in the monastery to ensure the safety of visitors and worshipers, as part of a comprehensive plan to preserve archaeological buildings and protect the lives of citizens.
