Apple officially announced the new generation of 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro computers, supported by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which are based on a completely new architectural structure known as Fusion Architecture, which integrates two third-generation 3nm packages into one integrated chip using advanced packaging technology.

The two chips share a central processor with 18 cores, exceeding the 14 cores in the M4 Pro and the 16 cores in the M4 Max. This processor is divided into 6 powerful Super Cores, which is Apple’s new designation for the highest performance cores, in addition to 12 efficiency cores. Apple promises an improvement of up to 30% in multitasking performance compared to the M4 generation.

The M5 Pro devices contain up to 20 graphics cores, while the M5 Max doubles this number to 40 cores. What is most notable here is that each graphics core carries within it a dedicated Neural Accelerator, which allows artificial intelligence computing performance that exceeds the performance of the M4 Pro and M4 Max by more than 4 times, according to Apple. Overall graphical performance improves by up to 20%, with a greater jump of 35% in ray tracing.

Apple also increased the maximum memory in the M5 Pro to 64 GB from 48 GB in the previous generation, with a transfer speed of 307 GB/s. In contrast, the M5 Max retains its maximum capacity of 128GB, but raises the bandwidth to 614GB/s. Both chips also support Thunderbolt 5, which Apple first launched with the previous generation M4.

Other additional features come Memory Integrity Enforcement, an always-on memory security protection, that Apple describes as an “industry first” as well as…Neural Engine with 16 cores andUpdated media engine with AV1 decoding support, up to 24 hours of battery life and storage space ranging from 1TB to 2TB depending on version.

As for prices: the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 Pro is $2,199, the 14-inch M5 Max is $3,599, the 16-inch M5 Pro is $2,699, and finally the 16-inch M5 Max is $3,899. Pre-order for the two models begins tomorrow, Wednesday, March 4, and they are expected to arrive in the market on March 11, 2026.
