Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaishi announced that her country’s government is in constant contact with the United States and Iran to stop the escalation in the Middle East.

“What is most important now is to achieve a rapid de-escalation of the situation,” Takaishi said during discussions in the Budget Committee of the House of Councilors (the upper chamber of Parliament).

The Prime Minister added that Tokyo continues its contacts with Washington at various levels, saying: “We continue to exchange views with the United States at various levels, and at the highest level we want to discuss the situation in detail, taking into account our country’s position.”

Takaishi added that Japan is also in contact with Iran, mainly through its Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

For his part, Motegi stated that Tokyo called for stability as soon as possible, saying: “It is very important now to achieve a rapid de-escalation of the situation. We have informed Iran of our deep concern about the attacks on neighboring countries, and we also expressed our deep concern about the actual closure of the Strait of Hormuz. We agreed to continue contacts to reduce tension.”
