A new study warns against excessive use of fish oil supplements or other supplements available without a doctor’s instructions to reduce harmful cholesterol, stressing that they do not provide a tangible effect compared to approved medications.

Warnings against excessive intake of fish oil supplements

According to what was published on the Health and Me website, the data showed that these supplements do not succeed in reducing levels of LDL, known as harmful cholesterol, nor do they reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke as expected. On the other hand, medications such as statins have proven clear effectiveness in reducing heart risks.

The results of some studies also indicate that fish oil supplements may, in some cases, lead to adverse results, such as increasing levels of harmful cholesterol or raising the risk of heart arrhythmia, especially atrial fibrillation.

However, this assessment does not apply to all forms of fish oil, as prescription versions, in high, purified concentrations, remain a treatment option for some high-risk patients, and are often used in combination with other medications.
