US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Denmark had been unable to do anything to keep what he described as the Russian threat away from Greenland, adding that the time had come and it would be done.
Trump annexed Greenland
Trump wrote in a post on the social media platform he owns, Truth Social, that NATO has informed Denmark for twenty years of the need to remove the Russian threat from Greenland, but Copenhagen has not succeeded, as he put it, in dealing with this matter.
Trump has repeatedly reaffirmed that he will not accept anything less than possession of Greenland, an autonomous territory that belongs to Denmark.
In contrast, the leaders of both Denmark and Greenland stressed that the island is not for sale, and does not want to become part of the United States.
On Saturday, Trump pledged to impose a wave of escalating tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland.
Trump said that the growing expansion of Chinese and Russian influence makes Greenland a vital region for American security interests, while Danish and other European officials pointed out that Greenland is already covered by NATO’s collective defense umbrella.
