Informed sources revealed to Page Six new scenes related to the project Tom Cruise The film, which was planning to be filmed in outer space, confirmed that the international star refused to resort to US President Donald Trump to obtain government support that would enable him to implement the film.
Tom Cruise refused to ask Trump for help to launch his film project in space
The idea of the film dates back to 2020, when it was announced that a collaboration would bring together star Tom Cruise with famous director Doug Liman, NASA, and SpaceX, to film the first feature film to be actually produced outside planet Earth.
Although the project had been circulating behind the scenes for years, sources close to the film industry confirmed that the work team needed formal coordination with the federal government and NASA, which required going through the Trump administration at the time.
The source said that Tom Cruise was not willing to request direct support from Trump, whether for political reasons or his desire to maintain the image of neutrality, which he has adhered to throughout his career.
Other reports previously indicated that Cruz declined the 2025 Kennedy Center honors citing scheduling conflicts, even though the president at the time was Trump.
Former NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, appointed by Trump, previously announced his support for the project via a tweet in which he said that NASA was excited to work with Tom Cruise to film a movie aboard the International Space Station, but the tweet was later deleted, and with Bridenstine leaving the agency, any official indications that the project would continue disappeared.
Despite Universal’s interest in participating in production, the film faced several challenges, including the difficulty of obtaining insurance for a film shot in an alien environment, and Tom Cruise’s busy schedule, especially with the “Mission: Impossible” projects, contributed to the postponement of the project.
Despite the stumble, Doug Liman confirmed that he is still enthusiastic about the idea, explaining that his goal is not to present a publicity stunt that relies solely on filming in space, but rather to make a film worth watching even after a century has passed.
So far, NASA, SpaceX, or Tom Cruise’s team have not issued any official statement clarifying the future of the project, while reports indicate that the idea has not been completely cancelled, but it is also not close to implementation.
