The US Department of the Interior announced that it will provide employees with new opportunities to leave the agency as part of a plan to improve efficiency, Reuters reported.
The US Department of the Interior said in a statement that it would introduce a deferred resignation and voluntary early retirement program, without providing details on the number of employees or parts of the agency that would be targeted, as reports indicated that this move is in line with President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to reduce the size of the federal government.
Direct dealing with visitors
The agency said it will move more National Park Service jobs to roles that require direct contact with visitors, and will modernize operations, including issuing permits, as part of the plan.
“By modernizing our operations, we are strengthening our ability to carry out the Interior Department’s mission and deliver world-class service to the American people,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in the statement.
The Department of the Interior administers approximately one-fifth of the United States’ territory and is responsible for energy and mineral development on public lands and waters, tribal relations, and the preservation of the nation’s cultural heritage.
