The Polish authorities foiled a plan for a large-scale terrorist attack, allegedly by ISIS, that was targeting a Christmas market in the country, officials announced, according to what was reported by Reuters.

Foiled an attempted attack in Poland

Jatsek Dobzinski, spokesman for Poland’s private security services, said that the security services detained a student suspected of preparing the attack, in statements he made on Tuesday.

Dobzinski explained that Mateusz W., a student at the Catholic University of Lublin, was planning to carry out an attack using explosives, and intended to join a terrorist organization.

He added that the goal of the crime was to spread terror in the hearts of a large number of people and support ISIS, noting that during the investigation, members of the Internal Security Agency confiscated data storage media and materials related to Islam.

The Public Prosecution charged Mateusz W. with carrying out preparatory work to carry out a terrorist attack that could have led to the death or serious injury of a large number of people.

It also reported that the accused took steps to establish contact with a terrorist organization, including seeking its support to carry out the attack.

During a press conference, Dobzinsky said that the man was fond of Islam, sought to establish contacts with ISIS, and was preparing to carry out an attack in Poland, in a city during the Christmas markets.

He added that the suspect was arrested inside his apartment in the city of Lublin, eastern Poland, last November.

He pointed out that members of the Internal Security Agency confiscated data storage media and materials related to Islam.

The official refused to reveal the name of the city in which he was planning to carry out the attack, justifying this by not causing a state of panic.

Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the suspect, who was placed in pretrial detention for three months.

This development comes after the attack that occurred on Bondi Beach in Australia, during the Jewish Hanukkah celebration, which killed 15 people and injured dozens.
