French Secretary of State for the Army Alice Ruffaut said on Wednesday that NATO NATOIt is a military alliance that guarantees the security of the European and Atlantic regions and was not formed to carry out operations in the Strait of Hormuz that would constitute a violation of international law, after US President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw Washington from the alliance.
France in response to Trump: NATO’s job is to protect Europe and the Atlantic… and not to carry out operations in the Strait of Hormuz
Ruffo added during the War and Peace Conference in Paris: Let me remind you of what NATO is. It is a military alliance concerned with the security of the European and Atlantic region. It was not designed to carry out operations in the Strait of Hormuz, as that would be a violation of international law.
In Berlin, a German government spokesman said that his country remains committed to NATO.
Trump said in an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph that he is seriously considering the United States’ withdrawal from the alliance after the allies’ failure to support American military action against Iran.
The American President described the alliance as a paper tiger, considering that the issue of the United States’ withdrawal from the joint defense treaty had now become more than just a reconsideration of relations with the alliance.
