A new study revealed that almond milk does not affect blood sugar levels, as it is a popular choice as a vegetarian alternative to cow’s milk, especially for those who suffer from lactose intolerance or seek to reduce calories.

Benefits of almond milk for the body

According to what was published by The Sun website, unsweetened almond milk does not lead to a sharp rise in blood sugar, as it is very low in carbohydrates, which makes it a suitable option for those trying to control glucose.

According to what was published on the Health and Me website, there are scientific studies that indicate that consuming unsweetened almond milk causes a gradual and moderate rise in blood sugar, followed by a natural decrease, without sharp jumps, and this stable pattern is better for metabolic health.

But the picture is different when choosing sweetened types. One cup of sweetened almond milk may contain more than 10 grams of carbohydrates due to added sugar, compared to less than one gram in the unsweetened type, and this increase may raise blood sugar to a greater extent, especially in diabetics.

Due to its low carbohydrate and calorie content, unsweetened almond milk is a good choice for diabetics, especially when used in place of sugary drinks. Reducing calories may also aid in weight loss, which is an important factor for improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation.

However, be aware that almond milk contains much less protein than cow’s milk, which may make it less filling if not consumed with another protein source.

Despite the difference in nutritional value, some small studies have shown that the effect of almond milk and cow’s milk (low-fat) on blood sugar may be similar when consumed with a meal such as oatmeal, but cow’s milk contains higher protein (about 8 grams per cup) compared to only about one gram in almond milk, which makes it more supportive of building muscle and feeling full.
