Studies have indicated that compounds found in dark chocolate may help improve heart health, by supporting blood flow and slightly lowering blood pressure. Research has also linked chocolate consumption to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
Dangers of dark chocolate
According to what was published by The Sun website, despite the benefits of dark chocolate, an important point appears here. Most of these studies relied on highly concentrated cocoa extracts or specially designed products, and not on commercial chocolate available in the markets, and the evidence as a whole is classified as weak or based on observations, which means that it does not prove a direct causal relationship.
Although they contain more cocoa, some types of dark chocolate may contain higher levels of sugar, reaching 40% or even 50%. This means that a 150-gram bar may contain about 19 teaspoons of sugar.
The arrangement of ingredients on the package also reveals the truth. If sugar comes at the top of the list, this means that it is the main ingredient, even in dark chocolate.
Experts advise looking for products that contain 70% cocoa or more, making sure that cocoa is the first ingredient. Moderation remains the most important factor, as the health value is not only related to the type of chocolate, but rather to the entire dietary pattern.
