Sheikh Hassan Al-Yadak, Secretary of Fatwa at the Egyptian Fatwa House, answered a question: “If I am playing a game and I take money from it as an additional job, and I do not put money in it, is this halal or haram?”, explaining that this type of transaction is that a person is good at a particular game and improves it, then when he reaches a high level, he sells the account or the game to another person and earns money from it, and then starts again.
Is earning money from video games and selling accounts permissible? The Fatwa Secretary answers
The Fatwa Secretary at the Egyptian Fatwa House explained, during television statements, that this gain is the result of a person’s effort, performance, and excellence in the game, but it needs controls in order for it to be legally permissible.
He added that the first requirement is that this game be permissible in its origins, so it is not a gambling game, and it does not include images or forbidden matters forbidden by Sharia law.
He pointed out that the second condition is that this game should not affect a person’s mind, psychology, or health, so that doctors warn against continuing with it, because some young people may become excessively preoccupied with it, which affects their concentration and health.
He stressed that the third rule is that this game should not be his only occupation, so that he does not distract himself from a useful work or useful role for himself and his community, and that it also does not affect his prayer and worship. If he adheres to these rules, it is permissible for him to earn from it and sell accounts, and there is nothing wrong with that according to Sharia law.
