Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadiq, President of Cairo University, announced that the university has achieved a new achievement by topping Egyptian universities and research institutions in the SCImago (SIR) classification for the year 2026, in addition to joining the first category (Q1) among the best 10% of universities and research institutions globally, out of more than 10,000 international institutions, which reflects its prestigious position and growing competitiveness on the global stage in the fields of scientific research and innovation.

The results of the classification confirmed Cairo University’s continued leadership at the local and African levels, as it maintained first place among Egyptian universities for the third year in a row (2024-2026), and advanced to first place in Africa in 2026 after coming in second place during the previous two years, in a clear indication of the continuous development in its institutional performance and indicators of its regional competitiveness.
At the global level, the university came in 997th place, with a strong performance in the scientific research axis, as it achieved 538th place globally in the research performance index, topping the local and African rankings, which reflects the growing international scientific production and the increase in publishing in high-impact journals. It also recorded remarkable progress in the community impact index, achieving 676th place globally, and sixth place in Africa, while maintaining first place locally, which reflects its increasing role in serving society and enhancing its cognitive and digital influence.
In terms of specializations, the university continued to consolidate its global position in a number of vital fields, as it ranked 47th globally in dentistry, 39th in veterinary medicine, and 178th in pharmacy, while topping the country and Africa in these specializations. It has also achieved a qualitative leap in the field of agriculture and biological sciences, advancing from 765th place globally in 2024 to 437th place in 2026, reflecting the effectiveness of targeted research policies.
In this context, Dr. Muhammad Sami Abdel-Sadiq stressed that this achievement reflects the continuous progress witnessed by the university in various aspects of academic and research performance, noting that its leadership locally and in Africa came as a result of implementing an integrated institutional strategy based on supporting scientific research, enhancing international publishing, and expanding global academic partnerships. He added that the university continues to enhance its international standing by investing in its scientific cadres and adopting innovative initiatives that support excellence and sustainability.
For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Saeed, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, explained that the classification results reflect the strength of the university’s research performance, stressing the continuation of work to develop the research and innovation system by supporting high-quality international publishing, expanding research partnerships, and maximizing the applied benefit of scientific research outputs in a way that serves development goals.
