The Chinese authorities announced a toughening of their stance on… cryptocurrencies, Through a comprehensive and final ban that includes all forms of decentralized digital currencies, in a move that confirms Beijing’s continued adoption of a strict policy towards this sector, which is witnessing sharp fluctuations globally.

The decision comes within a broader framework aimed at strengthening oversight of the financial system, protecting economic stability, and reducing risks associated with unregulated speculation, money laundering, and illicit capital flows.

Prevent trading, mining and issuing operations

Under the ban, trading, mining, issuing, promoting and providing services related to cryptocurrencies, whether to individuals or companies, are prohibited within Chinese territory.

The regulatory authorities confirmed that cryptocurrencies do not have legal status as a means of payment, and do not enjoy any legal protection, warning citizens against dealing with them or participating in investment activities related to them, due to the high financial risks they entail that may lead to serious losses.

The authorities also stressed that foreign platforms that provide services related to cryptocurrencies to residents of China are in violation of the law, and will face strict measures that include legal prosecution and blocking of services, explaining that any attempt to circumvent the imposed restrictions will be met with deterrent penalties.

Cryptocurrency markets

Analysts believe that this move reflects China’s endeavor to impose complete control over the monetary and financial system, at a time when it continues to support and develop its official digital currency, which is subject to the supervision of the Central Bank, as a regulated alternative that is in line with the state’s monetary policies.

At the global level, the decision is expected to affect cryptocurrency markets, especially in light of the role that Chinese investors and miners previously played in this sector, which may be reflected in liquidity and price levels, and increase the state of uncertainty that dominates the market.
