The NHS has issued a warning to people who frequently feel thirsty or suffer from dry mouth. Although these symptoms are often not serious, they can sometimes become more noticeable. Party drinks such as mulled wine, coffee, sparkling juice and cocktails can worsen dry mouth. Understanding the causes, symptoms and preventive measures can help protect your oral and digestive health.

Common symptoms of dry mouth

Dry mouth does not only mean regular thirst. It may feel sticky, uncomfortable, or even painful. Chapped lips, sores in the corners of the mouth, a burning tongue, an itchy throat, a hoarse voice, a dry nose, or even bad breath. All of these symptoms indicate dehydration.

Causes of dehydration

Breathing through the mouth at night, anxiety, oral thrush or cancer treatments such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy are among the causes of dehydration, as well as alcohol, caffeine, soft drinks, spicy, salty, acidic or sugary foods, smoking or sleeping with braces.
