The efforts of two states are accelerating after a person infected with measles traveled abroad on a domestic flight between two Australian cities.
The infected adult visited a number of locations in Adelaide in late December, before traveling to Sydney on Qantas flight QF748 on December 29 at 7:30pm.
Measles is a highly contagious and dangerous disease that can be associated with complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis. Symptoms include cough, runny nose and sore eyes, followed by a macular rash that usually begins on the head and then spreads down the body.

While the New South Wales Department of Health announced that anyone who was on a Qantas flight or in the passenger building should monitor for symptoms until January 16, and anyone in the emergency department should monitor for symptoms until January 21.
Earlier, health authorities in America warned of an increase in measles cases during the year 2025, and ongoing outbreaks of the disease threaten America’s position in eliminating the epidemic, with vaccination rates falling below the critical threshold.
The United States recorded more than two thousand cases of measles in 2025, the highest annual number the country has witnessed in decades.
Federal data reveal an alarming rise in this highly contagious disease, which was previously thought to be nearly eradicated from American soil.
