Dr. Mahmoud Al-Ubaidi, a scholar of the Ministry of Endowments, warned of the danger of the word on social networking sites, stressing that some words spread light and optimism in souls, while other words become a cause of harm and strife, stressing that our master Imam Hussein, may God be pleased with him, mentioned that the word is light or grave, as there are words that spread radiance, and others spread misguidance and illusions.

Is every word on social media to be believed? A scholar of endowments warns

Dr. Al-Obaidi pointed out, during television statements, that some young people publish statistics and numbers on social media without any official source, such as what is sometimes reported about divorce cases or social matters. He said: The problem is not only with the word itself, but with the people who believe it, so they build illusions upon illusions despite the incorrect information.

The scientist at the Ministry of Endowments explained that Sharia warns against transmitting news without verification, citing the story of Joseph, peace be upon him, and Jacob’s brothers who believed the lie despite knowing the truth, stressing that a person must obtain information from its correct source, and not believe any random or false talk.

Dr. Al-Ubaidi stressed the importance of referring to reliable official institutions such as Dar Al-Iftaa, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, and the Ministry of Endowments, adding: Even if an opinion appears on social media from a doctor, engineer, or pharmacist, the basic principle is to take the information from the recognized institution, because it is the legitimate and reliable reference.

He added that awareness-raising must begin from a young age, so that the child knows how to obtain information, where to get it from, and who to ask, noting that Dar Al-Iftaa, the Ministry of Endowments, and Al-Azhar have pages on social media that include millions of followers, yet some still question the validity of the information and claim that scholars have nothing to do with it.

He stressed that every word written on the Internet has great weight with God, and that freedom of expression does not mean spreading lies or misinformation, stressing that true prevention is through awareness and referring to reliable sources.
