The New York Times reported, citing its sources, that the United States is seeking to overthrow Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel without changing the political system in Cuba.

The sources said that the Americans hinted to Cuban negotiators that President Diaz-Canel should step down, and that the decision on the next steps would be taken by the Cubans themselves.

She added that Washington would not insist on any measures against the Castro family, but clearly stressed that any deal would be impossible as long as Diaz-Canel remained in office.

A source indicated to the newspaper that officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump believe that the overthrow of the Cuban president will allow for structural economic changes in the country that Diaz-Canel may not support.
