She announced Ministry of Transportation Moving the prices of railway train tickets and some subway segments, starting on the morning of Friday, March 27, 2026, as part of its keenness to clarify the facts to public opinion regarding the services provided to citizens.

Transport explains the reasons for moving train and metro ticket prices

The Ministry explained, in an official statement, that the decision to increase prices comes to confront the financial challenges faced by the Railway Authority and the National Tunnel Authority, most notably the high prices of petroleum products globally, which are imported in hard currency, in addition to the repeated increases in electricity prices over the past years, which constituted a major burden in light of the stability of ticket prices for long periods.

She added that the costs of maintaining the train and metro fleet witnessed a noticeable increase as a result of the increase in the prices of spare parts, as well as the ongoing development and efficiency work of a number of lines, which requires additional financial resources to maintain the level of service.

She also pointed out that the periodic increase in the wages of workers in the two bodies, as part of the state’s drive to improve the standard of living of workers in the administrative apparatus, represents one of the factors influencing the decision to move prices.

Maximizing the use of the assets and properties of the railway and tunnel authorities

The Ministry confirmed that it has been working during the past period to maximize the use of the assets and properties of the railway and tunnel authorities to increase resources, noting that these measures aim to ensure the sustainability of services and improve their quality.

Regarding the new amendments, the Ministry explained that train ticket prices on long lines were raised by 12.5%, and on short lines by 25%.

As for the subway (lines one, two and three), some segments were modified, as the ticket price for up to 9 stations rose to 10 pounds instead of 8 pounds, and up to 16 stations rose to 12 pounds instead of 10 pounds, while ticket prices for the remaining segments remained unchanged.

The Ministry called on citizens, especially students and workers in the public and private sectors, to take advantage of subscriptions that provide significant discounts on trips via trains and subways, thus reducing the burden of daily transportation.
