Marburg virus is classified as a severe hemorrhagic disease, as it causes widespread disruption of vital body functions, and death rates in some outbreaks may reach more than 80-90%.

The virus is transmitted through bodily fluids: blood, saliva, respiratory fluids, vomit, and sweat.

Direct contact with infected people or their bodies.

Contact with host animals; Most notable are fruit bats.

Contaminated surfaces and items such as bedding and care tools.

To date, there is no universally approved vaccine or cure, and it depends on supportive care: fluid replacement, bleeding control, and support of vital organs.

Ethiopia announced its first infection on November 14, 2025, followed by three deaths within days.

According to data from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the total number of confirmed cases reached 11, of which 6 deaths were recorded, while 5 infected people are undergoing medical treatment.

Also, 349 people suspected of having been in contact with the infected people were isolated, 119 of whom completed the observation period and were released from quarantine.

This outbreak has prompted neighboring countries and several transit countries to raise their state of alert, while the World Health Organization continues to send support and follow-up teams to contain the spread and prevent it from turning into a cross-border epidemic.

Symptoms of Marburg virus

It often begins with flu-like symptoms before the condition worsens over a few days:

Severe high temperature

Headache and muscle pain

Continuous fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea

Internal and external bleeding from the gums, nose, and digestive system

Low blood pressure and multi-organ failure in severe cases

The most dangerous stages usually appear between days eight and nine, and often coincide with massive bleeding and organ failure.

Ways to prevent Marburg virus

Avoid any direct contact with infected people or their bodies.

Wearing protective measures: gloves, masks, and protective clothing inside health facilities.

Wash and sanitize hands regularly.

Avoid visiting outbreak areas unnecessarily.

Adopting strict isolation procedures for suspected or confirmed cases.
