Comedian Kumail Nanjiani sparked a widespread wave of criticism after a comedy segment he performed during an awards ceremony. Oscar 2026, as a number of viewers considered that one of his jokes was inappropriate during the global cinematic event.

A joke about movie titles sparks controversy

While ascending to the stage to present the award for Best Live Short Film, Nanjiani presented a sarcastic segment in which he talked about the idea of converting long films into shorter versions, by changing their titles in a comedic way.

The comedian ironically renamed a number of famous films, changing the title of the movie It’s a Wonderful Life to “It’s a Wonderful Month,” and changing the title of the movie The King’s Speech to “The King’s Tweet.”

But the prank that sparked the most controversy was when he changed the title of the famous film Schindler’s List, the 1993 work directed by Steven Spielberg that tells the story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who helped save more than a thousand people from persecution during World War II.

Angry reactions on social media

After the clip spread across social media platforms, a number of followers expressed their dissatisfaction with the prank, considering that addressing sensitive historical events in a comedic context during an international ceremony such as the Oscars is inappropriate.

Some users wrote comments criticizing the comedic segment, with one of them describing it as an “unsuccessful joke,” while others saw that introducing such topics into jokes during an official ceremony lacks sensitivity.

Some critics also demanded that the comedian not be invited again to participate in the ceremony, considering that the prank exceeded acceptable limits.

Other opinions defend Nanjiani

On the other hand, a number of followers defended Nanjiani, stressing that what he said was just a verbal manipulation of the film’s title and not a mockery of the historical events that the work deals with.

Supporters pointed out that the comedy segment was intended only to change the titles of the films in a sarcastic manner, without diminishing the value of the topic that the film discusses.

Nanjiani’s segment also witnessed an unusual moment, after the award for Best Live Action Short Film ended in a rare tie between the films The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva, in an incident that is considered one of the few cases witnessed by the Academy Awards throughout its history.
