The city of Tama in Sohag Governorate witnessed rapid action from the local unit, after a sudden ground landing was detected in front of the East Tama police station, as part of the concern for the safety of citizens and vehicles.

Landing in Tama in front of the East Point

The situation was monitored on the ground by: Ashraf Mohamed, deputy head of the center, Ramadan Nawir, head of the Um Douma Village Council, and Mohamed Reda Salem, member of the follow-up, along with Engineer Mohamed Abdel Salam, head of the Tama Water Network, and Eng. Mohamed Abdel Rahman, head of the sewage network, where developments in the decline were followed moment by moment.

Upon initial examination, it was found that the collapse resulted from a collapse in the soil next to one of the sewage systems in the area. The necessary measures were immediately taken, and security barriers were created around the site, in anticipation of the fall of vehicles or individuals, and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Company was notified to take the necessary action.

In an explanatory statement, the Sohag Water and Sanitation Company confirmed that, following the inspection and field examination, it was found that there were no leaks emanating from the drinking water or sewage networks surrounding the landing site, indicating that there was no relationship between those networks and the accidental subsidence, which was likely the result of the poor condition of the soil and its weak cohesion.

The company added that among the possible reasons also is the lack of quality backfilling and compaction work for previous excavation works in the area, which may be carried out after the establishment of water and sanitation facilities, which contributed to the occurrence of ground subsidence.

Upon completion of the inspection and combing work, and in the presence and supervision of the concerned authorities in the center and city of Tama, it was discovered that there were two adjacent cable rooms that did not belong to the water company, and that there was a break in one of the walls of one of the two rooms, which allowed sand and soil to leak into the interior, in addition to the presence of cable openings that were not tightly closed, which led to the transfer of soil between the two rooms and caused ground subsidence.

Repairing the causes of the ground subsidence near the East Tama police station has been completed, and the road has been leveled with sand, with traffic flow returning to normal, and periodic follow-up is underway to ensure that the incident does not occur again.
