Google is working to improve the smart replies experience in the Messages app by adding a new feature called “Tap to Draft,” which aims to reduce the possibility of sending responses unintentionally.
The new feature appears within the application settings through the path Messages Settings > Suggestions, where Google has added a new option under the Smart Reply feature that allows the user to choose how to interact with the suggested responses.
The settings provide two main options:
- Tap to Send: Allows the smart reply to be sent immediately by clicking on it.
- Tap to Draft: Places the suggested response inside the message box first, allowing the user to edit it before sending it.

By default, Tap to Send is still the current default mode when the feature begins rolling out. However, the Tap to Draft option offers an additional step that gives the user the opportunity to review and edit the response, which reduces the possibility of an accidental submission.
The feature has begun to appear to some users in the beta version of the Google Messages application, number 20260303_00_RC00, while it has not yet reached the stable version of the application.
