The crisis of high memory chip prices is taking its toll on Retroid, the manufacturer of portable gaming devices. Retroid announced the sudden discontinuation of production of the Pocket G2 device, in addition to raising the official price of the Pocket Classic device. These shocking steps come only a few weeks after its previous announcement of stopping the production line of the 12 GB RAM version of the flagship Pocket 6 device.

Retroid published an official statement on its social media channels to explain the details of these difficult decisions to its fans. The administration confirmed the temporary suspension of manufacturing of the Pocket G2 portable device, which it unveiled in late October of 2025 and began shipping it in the same month. Retroid attributed the main reason behind this unfortunate decision to the severe and continuous fluctuations in the prices of memory chips, which directly affected production costs.

As a result of this shocking announcement, Retroid’s official website listed the Pocket G2 as a product that is currently out of stock. Third-party retailers on popular shopping platforms such as AliExpress took advantage of this severe shortage to dramatically raise the prices of the remaining devices in their warehouses, as the price of this device, which was originally sold for $219, jumped to record levels of $260.

The company assured its fans that the older Retroid Pocket 5 device will remain available for direct purchase. This version offers features almost identical to the Pocket G2, with the exception of the type of processor used. Fortunately, Retroid did not announce any price increases for this model, so its official price settled at $199. This device is currently available on the Amazon platform at a discounted price of $209, a discount of 40% from its original price of $249, which makes it an excellent deal now.

The bad news does not stop, as Retroid was forced to make new pricing decisions regarding its other devices. The company announced its plans to raise the official price of its vertical-designed portable device, the Pocket Classic, in response to these economic pressures. The price of this device, which is currently sold for US$129, will rise to US$149, starting on Friday, March 20.
