Apple is currently testing an advanced 200-megapixel telephoto camera sensor in preparation for integrating it into iPhone phones next year. The leaks revealed this important step that reflects Apple’s ambition to make a qualitative shift in imaging capabilities, as the reliable source indicated that Apple is conducting extensive tests on a 1/1.2-inch sensor to simulate the mighty sensor expected to appear in the upcoming Find X9 Ultra phone from Oppo.

The technical markets recently witnessed the launch of the Find Previous leaks from the same source confirm that the upcoming Ultra model from Oppo will go much further by introducing a larger sensor measuring 1/1.28 inches to raise the ceiling of the competition in the quality of image capture and its fine details.

These recent developments represent a radical and surprising change in Apple’s strategy compared to reports issued last January. Previous reports indicated that 200-megapixel sensors were only under discussion within Apple’s supply chains and did not appear in any engineering models, as Apple focused at the time on improving the current 48-megapixel systems, and this coincided with a report from Morgan Stanley that expected Apple to postpone the move to 200-megapixel cameras until 2028.

Samsung took a big step ahead of its competitors when it introduced a 200-megapixel rear camera in the Galaxy S23 Ultra during 2023 and maintained it in subsequent versions. These superior cameras give iPhones the ability to capture images that are very rich in fine detail with a much higher resolution, allowing users to crop images larger and print them in very large sizes without losing image quality or affecting its purity.

Apple plans to launch the standard iPhone 18 phone in early 2027 within a new, divided launch cycle, before the advanced Pro models follow at the usual time during the month of September. Technology enthusiasts are anticipating that next year will witness the launch of a special and festive version on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the launch of the first iPhone phones, as expectations are moving towards presenting a phone that is equivalent to the Pro models or represents a higher and more luxurious category, similar to what Apple presented previously with the iconic iPhone
