Apple recently launched iOS 26.2.1 and iPadOS 26.2.1 updates for its latest devices, but the surprise was in launching an additional update dedicated to a number of older devices, including the iPhone 5s, which is 13 years old, and the iPhone 6, which has been released for 12 years.

In conjunction with this, the company released the iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 updates to benefit users of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, in addition to the iPad Air, iPad mini 2 and mini 3, as well as the sixth generation iPod Touch, as it is recommended to install this update as soon as possible.

Although the new update does not add functional features, it extends the credentials required to operate iMessage and FaceTime services and the device activation process. Accordingly, its installation becomes necessary to ensure the continued use of these devices after January 2027.

It is worth noting that Apple launched iOS 12 about eight years ago, yet it still provides limited support for older devices, which reflects the company’s commitment to extending the life of its products. It is also reported that Apple had issued a security update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 during the year 2023.
