Sometimes modern music services offer it all easily, but the sheer amount of options can leave the listener confused. If you prefer listening to your favorite album or next mixtape in a more tactile way, Maxwell may have created the device you’ve been waiting for.

The company unveiled the new cassette player on Threads this week, and although the cassette is outdated, responses to the device have quickly sold out of stock on Amazon.

This is not the traditional cassette player that has been on store shelves for 30 years. Unlike the cassette players of old, Maxwell has added a USB-C port for charging and Bluetooth support for audio, allowing your tape collection to be listened to with ease and with the convenience of modern devices, while maintaining the traditional 3.5mm input.

The design is simple and elegant, with a tactile clip that’s easy to hold and an LED indicator to display battery level, which is up to 11 hours when listening via Bluetooth.

The player also features tactile buttons on the top, including a long play button compatible with the stop, fast rewind and fast forward buttons. It comes in one white color, and can play any cassette tape, but it does not support recording or playing any media other than cassette.

In a world dominated by royalty-free streaming services and AI-generated tracks that lack the authenticity and emotion of hand-mixing, Maxwell’s modern cassette player is a breath of fresh air.

However, some are hoping that the upcoming version will support playing MP3 files via microSD card, so once Bluetooth is added, why not add a touch of modernity a little more?
