Honey and jam are two of the most popular toppings for bread, but with increasing health awareness, many are asking the question of which is the better choice. While honey may seem more “natural,” jam also has some benefits associated with its ingredients.
Benefits of honey and jam
According to the Verywell Health website, honey and jam both contain high levels of sugar, but each has different nutritional properties that may affect the choice.
Honey is classified as a natural sweetener produced by bees, and contains a group of beneficial compounds such as antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It also has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, and may contribute to supporting heart and respiratory health, in addition to its role as a natural cough suppressant.
Some studies also indicate that honey may raise blood sugar to a lesser extent compared to regular sugar, making it a relatively better option for those seeking to control sugar levels, with the need for moderation in quantity.
On the other hand, jam is made from cooked fruit with sugar, and its benefits are derived from the type of fruit used, especially if it is berries rich in antioxidants such as polyphenols, which may contribute to reducing inflammation and supporting heart and brain health.
