A high-ranking Lebanese source stated that the State of Lebanon will not enforce the control of weapons in the hands of the Lebanese army, indicating that his country is in a weak position in negotiations with Israel.
When asked about the situation in the Lebanese ceasefire negotiations with Israel, the source explained in statements to Cairo 24 that nothing is clear about the negotiations yet, but he pointed out that the United States will be a sponsor of the negotiations, according to the latest developments up to the moment.
Lebanon is in a weaker position
The source pointed out that the circumstances of the negotiations with Israel differ from the negotiations to demarcate the maritime borders, saying: “The circumstances are different this time, as Lebanon is in a weaker position, and it cannot impose its conditions, unfortunately.”
The source indicated that Lebanon is awaiting Hezbollah’s decision, whether or not it will cooperate with the decision of a demilitarized Beirut.
Weapons are restricted to the state
These statements come in light of the escalation of tensions on the border between Lebanon and Israel, following rounds of military escalation that coincided with the Israeli-Iranian war.
The international community seeks to stabilize the ceasefire and push towards negotiations aimed at calming the situation.
On the other hand, the Lebanese interior faces severe political and economic challenges, in addition to the Hezbollah weapons issue, which represents a fundamental point of contention internally and externally, especially in light of international pressure calling for weapons to be restricted to the state.
