Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis announced the inclusion of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on the list of foreign terrorist organizations, in a move that sparked widespread controversy within the United States.
DeSantis directed all state agencies to take the necessary measures to stop any support or benefits, directly or indirectly, for any entity that provides “material support” to the two organizations, according to what was published by Newsweek.
The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR are included in the list of terrorist organizations in Florida
DeSantis said in a statement published on his official account on the X platform: The decision is effective as of now, adding that state institutions are required to take all legal measures to prevent illegal activities attributed to those entities.
In another post from his personal account, the governor revealed that state lawmakers are working on preparing legislation to prevent what he described as “the creep of Sharia law,” expressing his hope that the legislature “will codify this protection against the Brotherhood and (CAIR).”
For its part, CAIR, which is the largest American organization for defending the civil rights of Muslims, responded by announcing its intention to sue DeSantis, considering his decision “defamatory and unconstitutional,” and based on “baseless accusations” by classifying it as a foreign terrorist organization.
In a joint statement issued by its national office and its branch in Florida, the organization accused the state’s governor of giving “priority to the Israeli government at the expense of serving the people of Florida,” pointing to the holding of the first official meeting of his government in Israel, and to what it said was “the transfer of millions of taxpayer money” into Israeli bonds.
She also recalled his previous attempt to close Students for Justice in Palestine branches at Florida universities, before he backed down following a lawsuit filed against him.
This decision comes after Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced last month that he had designated the Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal entities.
