Rospiliosi called a session on Wednesday at 6:00 pm local time (11 pm GMT) to elect a new president of Congress, who will assume the duties of head of state, the agency said.

Jerry was accused of misconduct after holding secret meetings with a Chinese businessman who owned a government concession for one of his companies.

Jerry denied any wrongdoing, describing the meetings as circumstantial. He also denied that the businessman had asked him for any kind of services or support.

Jerry, 39 years old, assumed the presidency last October after becoming President of Congress following the impeachment of President Dina Boluarte. Boluarte had led the executive branch since the impeachment and arrest of Pedro Castillo in 2022, who held the position for a year and a half.

Since the turn of the millennium, at least seven Peruvian presidents have been on trial or faced lawsuits related to allegations of corruption or human rights violations, while the eighth president, Alan Garcia, committed suicide by shooting himself when the police were approaching him.
