Journalist Bassem Youssef sparked a wide wave of controversy on social media platforms, after he appeared as a guest on the podcast of American media personality Candace Owens, in an episode that achieved more than a million views within 24 hours, despite its duration being nearly two hours.

Bassem Youssef said, in a post on his Facebook account, that his participation in the podcast was a revealing and different experience, stressing that it prompted him to rethink the feasibility of dialogue with parties that differ radically in political orientations, right and left, as long as there was agreement on crucial issues, foremost of which is the broad influence of the Zionist lobby within the joints of the American state.

Youssef explained that Candace Owens, known for her affiliation to the American right-wing and her controversial positions on the left, is being subjected to severe criticism due to previous positions described as hostile to Arabs and Muslims, as well as her public disagreements with the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite this, he pointed out that today she adopts a clear position against Israel and against the influence of the Zionist lobby.

Bassem Youssef asked: Is it logical to refuse dialogue with any party that disagrees with us politically for fear that we will be thought to adopt all of its ideas, even if we agree with it on a pivotal issue of this magnitude? He stressed his understanding and respect for those who reject this type of dialogue, but at the same time he stressed that this closure may lead to losing real opportunities to convey the Palestinian narrative to circles that have not previously been addressed.

Bassem Youssef: Adhering to ideological purity wastes opportunities to communicate our cause

Youssef criticized what he described as exaggerated adherence to ideological purity, considering that it stands as an obstacle to expanding the scope of influence, at a time when the Zionists move flexibly and communicate with both the right and the left, while fueling the conflict between them.

Regarding his personal experience with Candice Owens, Bassem Youssef explained that the meetings outside the camera revealed a gentle, natural, and light-hearted personality, noting that there were fundamental differences between them, but they agreed on basic issues related to what is happening in the United States and the Middle East, most notably the Palestinian issue.

Youssef also praised Onz’s frankness, stressing that she spoke clearly about her previous positions, and about how she and other influencers were exposed in their early years to what he described as real brainwashing through the American media, explaining that her positions have evolved significantly, especially towards Palestine, Israel, Arabs and Muslims.

Bassem Youssef affirmed his respect for anyone who has the humility, intelligence, and courage to review himself and confront the programming that has been planted within him for years, considering that this path is not considered weakness, but rather represents true courage and actual growth.

Youssef considered that the record numbers achieved by the episode reflect the public’s thirst for alternative narratives, in light of the decline in the reach of many voices due to changes in the algorithms of social media platforms. He revealed that work is currently being done to translate the episode into Arabic as soon as possible, calling on the public to share it as widely as possible.

Bassem Youssef concluded his statements by saying: Unfortunately, all we have left now is talking, venting, and screaming into the air.
