issued Ministry of Transportation issued a media statement today in which it indicated that, within the framework of the Ministry’s approach to informing public opinion of all the facts related to the services provided by the Ministry and its affiliated bodies and companies to the public of citizens, it was decided, starting on the morning of Friday, March 27, 2026, to move the prices of railway train tickets and the ticket prices of some segments for riding the metro.

Firstly, railway trains

Raising the prices of train tickets on long lines by 12.5%, and raising the prices of train tickets on short lines by 25%.

Secondly, the subway (lines one, two and three)

  • Moving the ticket price for the number of stations up to 9 stations to become 10 pounds instead of 8 pounds
  • Moving the ticket price for the number of stations up to 16 stations to become 12 pounds instead of 10 pounds
  • The ticket price is fixed for the number of stations up to 23 stations, remaining the same at 15 pounds
  • The ticket price is fixed for more than 23 stations and up to 39 stations, remaining the same at 20 pounds

The Ministry called on citizens, especially students and employees in the public and private sectors, to subscribe for train and metro rides, which enjoy significant discounts on their various movements across railway trains and the three metro lines.

The Ministry of Transport also explained in its statement that the reasons for this movement in the price of train tickets and some segments for subway rides are due to the following reasons:

It is necessary to provide operating expenses, as the Railway Authority and the National Tunnel Authority face major financial challenges as a result of the high prices of petroleum products globally, which are imported in hard currency, as well as the increase in electricity prices over the past years more than once, which constituted a major financial burden on the two authorities in light of the stability of ticket prices.

The large financial burden incurred by maintenance of the current fleet of railway and metro trains as a result of the high prices of spare parts, as well as the ongoing efficiency and development work being carried out on a number of existing railway lines.

The wages of workers in the two bodies are increased periodically, like other state employees, within the framework of the Egyptian state’s keenness to provide a decent life for all employees of the government apparatus.

The Ministry also explained in its statement that, during the last period, it worked to increase the volume of investment in all assets and properties of the railway and tunnel authorities to increase the resources of the two authorities, and that these measures that were approved will contribute to ensuring the sustainability of distinguished services for the public of citizens.
