Fire Al-Azhar Al-Sharif A new awareness message within his intellectual campaign “Awareness” aimed to correct the misconceptions raised by some about the obligation of the hijab, and the claim that there is no Qur’anic text proving its obligation, in an attempt to cast doubt on one of the legal rulings established in Islamic law.

Dr. Abu Al-Yazid Salama, Director General of Qur’anic Affairs in the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector, explained that the hijab is obligatory on every adult, sane Muslim woman according to the text of the Book of God and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him. The honorable companions and scholars of the nation throughout the ages have unanimously agreed on its hypothesis, stressing that saying that there is no Qur’anic text indicating its obligation is a linguistic and legal fallacy.

The Director General of Qur’anic Affairs stated that the premise of the rulings in the Holy Qur’an is not required to come with the word “obligated upon you,” explaining that many of the legal duties are established in the imperative form, which is what the scholars of the principles of jurisprudence have decided, citing the Almighty’s saying in Surah An-Nur: “And let them draw their veils over their bosoms,” indicating that “The veil” in language is what a woman covers her head and neck with, and the command to wear it over the pocket is clear evidence of the obligation to cover the head and chest.

Al-Azhar responds to those who deny the hijab hypothesis: Sharia rulings are not based on whims

Dr. Salama added that Surat Al-Nur itself opened with the Almighty’s saying: “A Surah We have sent down and made obligatory,” which is confirmation that the provisions contained in it are among the legal obligations, as stated in the Almighty’s saying: “O Prophet, say to your wives and your daughters: And the women of the believers will draw over them some of their robes.” This is an explicit text that includes all the women of the believers, and is not specific to the mothers of the believers as some claim.

The Director General of Qur’anic Affairs in the sector pointed out that the Sunnah of the Prophet confirmed this meaning, citing the hadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, to Asma’ bint Abi Bakr, may God be pleased with them both, when he said: “O Asma’, when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it is not appropriate for her to be seen except this and this,” pointing to his face and hands, which is what scholars have inferred that a woman’s private parts are all of her body except the face and hands.

Dr. Salama stressed that the hijab is not a social custom or a national costume, but rather a legal ruling linked to covering the private parts and achieving the purposes of Sharia law in preserving human dignity, stressing that Sharia rulings are not based on whims or personal convictions, but rather on Sharia texts and the understanding of established scholars.
