The Directorate of Health Affairs in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate issued a new awareness bulletin alerting to the dangers of dehydration among children during the holy month of Ramadan, especially with the desire of some of them to try fasting and share this ritual with the family, stressing the need for parents to monitor the health status of children on an ongoing basis.
The Kafr El-Sheikh Health Directorate explained, in a statement issued by it, that children’s bodies are more vulnerable to fluid loss and stress compared to adults, which requires careful attention to the child’s ability to endure hours of fasting without being exposed to any health complications.
The bulletin confirmed that there are a number of signs that indicate the onset of dehydration, which requires breaking the fast immediately and replacing the child with fluids, including feeling extreme thirst accompanied by general weakness or weakness, noticeably less urination or turning the color of urine to dark yellow, in addition to unusual lethargy, a strong desire to sleep, rapid fatigue, poor concentration, or confusion of mind.
Warning signs also included a feeling of dizziness or loss of balance while standing or walking, as well as the appearance of signs of fainting or sudden falls, which are indicators that require immediate intervention to preserve the child’s safety.
The Kafr El-Sheikh Health Directorate stressed that the child’s health comes first, pointing out that not all children are able to fast, and their bodies may not be prepared to withstand long hours of abstinence from food and drink.
The Directorate also advised that it is necessary to consult a doctor before allowing children to fast, especially for those under the age of approximately ten or those suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes or kidney disease, and to monitor any symptoms that may appear during fasting.
She pointed out that if symptoms of dehydration persist or worsen even after breakfast, you must immediately go to the nearest hospital or consult a doctor to receive the necessary medical care.
