CNN reveals details of the largest land reclamation project in Egypt’s history

The report explained that the project is being held in the heart of Western Sahara, along the Rod al-Farag-Dabaa road, where a huge agricultural area equivalent in area to 4 to 5 governorates is being established, in an unprecedented step to promote agricultural development.

The area of the “New Delta” is more than 2.2 million acres, which contributes to increasing the agricultural area in Egypt by about 23%, which is equivalent to approximately a quarter of the currently cultivated land.

The project is not limited to agriculture only, but rather represents the nucleus of an integrated society, as it provides more than 250,000 job opportunities, and aims to accommodate about 3 million families, in addition to establishing industrial and logistical zones linking the governorates of Matrouh, Beheira, Giza and Fayoum.

The report indicated that providing water was the biggest challenge, as the 170-kilometre-long Hammam Canal was implemented to transport about 7.5 million cubic meters of water per day after treatment, in addition to the “Long Live Misr” Canal, which pumps about 10 million cubic meters per day of Nile water through the Rosetta Branch, in addition to relying on the underground reservoir.

The project aims to achieve food security by expanding the cultivation of strategic crops such as wheat, corn, and legumes, in addition to vegetables and fruits, using the latest irrigation systems and rationalizing water consumption.

The report emphasized that the “New Delta” does not represent just an agricultural project, but rather an integrated development vision to build new communities and enhance sustainability, which constitutes a major step towards a more stable economic and food future for Egypt.
