Islam Al-Jazzar, spokesman for the agency, said Consumer protectionThe head of the agency, Ibrahim Al-Sijini, led a surprise monitoring campaign on the markets in the Boulaq Al-Dakrur and Nahiya regions in Giza Governorate, in implementation of the directives of the political leadership and the government’s mandates to intensify monitoring of the markets and prevent any manipulation of prices.
Al-Jazzar: Intensive campaigns to control markets and prevent price manipulation
Al-Jazzar explained that the campaign aimed to monitor the availability of basic goods to citizens and monitor their prices on the ground, in addition to ensuring that merchants are committed to announcing prices and not exaggerating them, noting that the tour included fruit and vegetable markets, poultry shops, and tourist bakeries, in addition to some commercial chains.
He added that the campaigns monitored some violations related to failure to announce prices and attempts to manipulate them, as 7 violation reports were issued for merchants who violated the rules regulating the display of prices, stressing that the reports were referred to the Public Prosecution to take the necessary legal measures.
A spokesman for the Consumer Protection Agency indicated that the penalties imposed for such violations range between 500,000 pounds and two million pounds, with the penalty doubled in the event of a repeat violation.
Al-Jazzar confirmed that food commodities are available in large quantities in the markets, stressing the continuation of intensive monitoring campaigns in various governorates to control markets and prevent exploitation of citizens or manipulation of prices in light of economic changes.
He called on citizens to cooperate with the agency and report any violations, pointing out the possibility of using the “Price Radar” application that the agency recently launched, which allows citizens to know the average prices of goods in the markets and compare prices between different stores.
